Workshop: Refinement, Alignment, Strength and Attentiveness
Tribal Fusion is an evolving genre reflecting common denominators between North African, Arab, Persian and Turkish secular dance traditions. These classical dance traditions reflect the aesthetic of women's dances and movements dating back over 7,000 years to practices of matriarchal traditions. The dance is presently transforming through interactions with new technology in world music, cultural dialogue between the East and West, and intense international interest in American hip hop and electronic music. The resulting movement values a nominal use of space, percussive hip work, lyrical arm and torso work, and emphasizes musical interpretation over movement bravado.

Donna's workshop summarizes and details the most efficient tools for unleashing the intelligence of the body in dance. Topics covered include breathing techniques, optimal alignment, muscle efficiency and building longevity through precision and strength. Rather than focusing on choreography, Donna will detail cross-training tips from various classical traditions that create a sophisticated and polished dancer. Known for her candor, humor and precision, Donna's thoughtful approach to movement offers completely new perspectives.

Though women many dominate the performance arena for the genre, men are absolutely welcome as participants. Donna's classes are typically vigorous and she recommends athletic attire, yoga mats and bare feet (knee pads optional). Donna respectfully requests that participants with previous injuries or medical concerns please consult her via email before attending for an honest assessment of risk factors.

About Donna:
Donna Mejia is a choreographer, lecturer, teacher, administrator, and performer specializing in contemporary dance, traditions of the African Diaspora, and new fusion traditions in world electronica. She taught at Colorado College for 10 years and was Director of the Colorado College International Summer Dance Festival for the last half of her term.
For twelve years she served as managing director of the award-winning Harambee African Dance Ensemble of CU-Boulder. She continues to teach, choreograph and perform Modern dance, Improvisiation, Hip Hop, Jazz, Arabic Tribal Fusion and traditional dances of the African Diaspora for Colorado College as well as colleges and dance festivals internationally. Donna is an authorized instructor of Brazilian Silvestre Modern Dance Technique.

Hello lovelies!!! I am trying to coordinate with Jill a weekend of workshops but trying to determine whether once again I want to take it down to NYC or stay more local ( the concerns being wanting to benefit and therefore foster our own community here in New england, but fearful of lack of attendance in our wee corner of the world).

Thoughts?

Workshop Descriptions:
Integrating Tarot and dance as a spiritual practice - Sugati
Throughout history, the tarot has traveled from sacred oracle to sideshow attraction, and then back again to an introspective practice in which we can better know ourselves. Within this workshop we will encounter how our dance can be a healing practice, one that opens a channel from our bodies to our spirits, while still incorporating the mind. Within this relaxed environment we will use improvisational Middle Eastern-inspired dance to power a connection, forming a relationship between the movements that we’ve learned and drilled as dancers and the ancient art of reading the tarot. Revealing how powerful it can be for our bodies to meet and take part within our spirituality.

Circadian, finding your inner and outer rhythm - Katie Bertsche
Rhythms fill our lives, from our waking and sleeping, walking, eating, coming and going...tides, the seasons, day and night, our habits and instincts join us with all dancing living things. And of course, Rhythm is the heart of bellydance. We'll explore together different ways to hear rhythm in music, and how we can translate that into movement. Is the music fast? slow? syncopated? even? Do you express the rhythm in yourself or can you have a conversation with it? What do you do when there apparently is no rhythm...we'll have to make our own!

Pops and Locks Laced with Smoove Slink - Joy Herbst
Are you craving more slink peppered with some syncopated locks in your tribal fusion dancing?
In this class Joy will lead you through style defining drills and exercises to better toggle between snake-like movements
and pops and locks. Combinations will be taught integrating the techniques learned in class.

Free Rhythm Warmup with Chris Phillips
We'll spend some time warming up and going over basic middle eastern rhythms. All drummers, musicians and dancers are welcome to join in. Free.

Begintermediate Dumbek with Dwayne Green
Beginners and intermediate dumbek players will enjoy learning and embellishing basic rhythms with Dwayne.

For updates and an open exchange of ideas for all facets of this event, check out our tribe on Tribe.net. http://tribes.tribe.net/nomadicsummerspirit

New Tribal Class--Interested?????

Hello gorgeous! I am considering starting a new dance class on Sunday afternoons that will teach the Basics of Tribal technique and American Tribal combinations and group improvisation. This style of dance includes the use of the musical instrument Zills (finger cymbals, or sagat). I will have zills for sale as well, we would start working with them about 2-3 weeks into the session.

Classes will start in May on Sunday afternoons at Revive Wellness Center on Whalley Ave, but ONLY if I get committed students who are interested in coming to class on a regular basis! Classes will be offered for $18 a drop in or the full 8 week session at the discounted price of $120.oo

Spring is here-- Tribal is ripe! Let's dance!
Please let me know in earnest if you would like to attend classes.

Thanks so much for your responses- xox-JoY

Parting is such sweet sorrow...

This is The Final Gathering. I can hardly believe it. Sugati and I have been blessed with all your beautiful, creative energies for so long now, it's difficult to think of this as the end.

But end it we must, and we would ask you to cancel all your plans, drive as far as you dare, hear the drummer's call and DO NOT MISS THIS! This promises to be one radically rhythmic wing-ding!

Feel free to bring libations and food (vegetarian at least, preferably vegan) for your own nourishment but to share as well, if you are so moved...

blessings, Chris

Gathering of the Tribal Moon - Friday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m.

We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance ~ Japanese Proverb

Gathering of the Tribal Moon
Charter Oak Cultural Center
Sunday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m.
FREE

What do you feel when the moon is full? Extra hairy? A desire to swell with the rising tide? Illuminated with the urge to dance and make music and dance some more? Let the lunar rhythms guide the music and the motion making you move on this magnificent night.

The Tribe follows no specific dogma, we are coming together in what was once the oldest synagogue in Connecticut. It is an evening of merrymaking, pure and simple, dress outrageously, have a little wine, drum and dance and laugh and sing, my friends.

Drummers, Dancers, Musicians and Others will gather every full moon to participate in a truly tribal experience. We will start with basic Middle-Eastern rhythms to get the dancers moving and see where we go from there. Please bring instruments, the desire to dance or the enthusiasm to share in a tribal experience. Extra drums and other percussion will be available as well.

Please consider joining the tribe for updates and an open exchange of ideas for all facets of this event, http://tribes.tribe.net/gatheringofthetribalmooninhartford

drum my friends,
drum and dance and wiggle in your pants.
revolution is happening in your hips and hands
let me be free - let you be free too
free to laugh and sing and drum and dance
drum my friends,
drum and dance and wiggle in your pants.

Another Gathering...
Sunday, November 25 at 7:30 p.m.

More Gatherings....

Gathering of the Tribal Moon - Saturday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m.

I know what you're asking yourself, fireworks or the Tribal Gathering? How about both! We start the jam at 7:30 and then there's plenty of time to walk to the closest place to see the bombs bursting in air which are scheduled for 9:45 p.m., enough time to get some dancing and drumming in...

We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance ~ Japanese Proverb

*** SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ***
Connecticut PURE chapter will be having a rehearsal on Saturday July 7th at 6 p.m., right before Gathering of Tribal Moon at Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford. New dancers and drummers welcome! Chris and I would love to see some more faces, so please spread the word to interested people you know. Please do come, and stay for the gathering afterwards.

Big Beautiful Belly Dancer 2008 Calender call for photos

Greetings all belly dancing beauties!

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

totallynortherntribal.com/BBBD....ar.htm

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2008.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

Kamala Devi and the BBBD 2008 Calendar Committee

DISCLAIMER: there is no connection between Totally Northern Tribal (TNT) and the BBBD 2008 Calendar. Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi, a member of TNT, linked off her TNT Member’s Page.

A new belly dance class is beginning June 5th at the Revive Wellness Center, 867 Whalley Ave, New Haven, 7:30-8:30 - just minutes from Yale.

This is a fun, updated, contemporary twist on traditional belly dance, incorporating different genres of the dance, and infused with stylistic

We will be using the traditional cabaret style or tribal fusion as a foundation, adding different style elements and moves to suite the ethnic flavor. We will dance to music appropriate to the styles - traditional, fusion, alternative and more, for the full effect.

Come for fun, exercise, and to meet new people. All levels are welcome!

Please feel free to mssg for more details or questions, and to preregister for June.

I'm sure many of you have already heard about Alyssum and her room mate's tragic misfortune. I read about it here last night( http://melodiapants.tribe.net/thread/1bb9a0ca-c96e-497e-b0fa-8d81fc405923 ) and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. I can't even imagine... I wanted to send them some things, but there's a size issue.

So, I'm proposing a benefit show and auction to help them out. Anyone else in? You can count in myself and my drummer, for starters.

What say you all?

Announcing Auditions for Connecticut's only Dark Cabaret and Tribal Fusion Dance Troupe

Hello fellow Connecticut dancers, musicians and overall groovy cats:
I will be holding auditions for a Dark Cabaret and Tribal Fusion troupe within the next two weeks in the New Haven area. It is expected that dancers auditioning will wish to be a part of a serious and professional performance troupe that will have regular rehearsals and bylaws with the hopes of maintaining a stellar standard and provide professional dance performances in Connecticut, and elsewhere.

The audition will consist of two pieces-- The first prepapared by you! I hope to see what makes your dance style you-- your strengths and styley schtuffs. The second will be a combination that I will teach to observe the style that will be characteristic of our troupe as well as evaluating the ability to learn and perform choreography.

All interested parties please message me here or call my cell at 203-640-0530.

Thanks for reading! Forward to any other talented dancers who may be interested!
Many thanks and well wishing this Spring! - JoY

Aunt Rocky is coming to Yale!

She will be giving a talk on Middle Eastern dance at a Master's Tea for Silliman College next Friday, March 30th, at 4 p.m., in the Swing Space common room. The lecture is free and open to the public, and I invite all New Haven and CT-area dancers to attend!

Swing Space is a student residence building located at 100 Tower Parkway, next to Payne Whitney Gym. You can see a map of the area here: http://business.yale.edu/map/#building:NRH . The residence's gate and front door are kept locked, but we will try to have students on duty to open them to visitors.

We're very excited to be hosting her, and, as usual, Morocco is not to be missed, if you can help it. I hope to see some of you there!

*** Welcoming Kami Friday Night in Hartford! ***

Hey all,

Kami is actually coming into Hartford Friday (tomorrow) night and we have a chance to welcome her in true Tribal New England style...

If I can get 15 dancers and/or musicians to commit by 3 p.m. to coming to ArtSPace in Hartford on Friday, February 9th at 8 p.m., I think it'll be worth getting together. It'll be a gathering to welcome Kami with Middle Eastern, fusiony tribal music and dance. We'll have an open floor all night, hopefully with enough drummers/musicians to keep it live but ipod selections will be honored, if necessary. Performances are welcome as well. BYOB, y'all!

If you want to do this, email me at chris.phillips@charteroakcenter.org by 3 p.m. and I'll send out an announcement with all details if we're on, before 4 p.m.

shimmies & finger rolls,
Chris

Gathering of the Tribal Moon - Sunday, February 4 at 7:30 p.m.

*** SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ***
The Gathering is a very special place, giving Middle Eastern tribal dancers the opportunity to move with live music and players of all kinds of instruments are welcome to play. I ask that as drummers, we respect the dancers and quieter musicians by playing with them, not against them. For example, djembes, when played full-on African-style can be so overwhelming, players of quieter instruments are drowned out and dancers who frequent the Gathering lose inspiration. So, if we watch our volume and choose appropriate instruments to play, we should be able to hear everyone while keeping the tribal vibe alive... thank you, Chris

Let the full moon guide you to the Gathering of the Tribe.

I recently attended my first PDF burn and am now addicted. I recieved a lot of comments about my dancing, and have become very interested in learning poi, fire spinning, fire fans, etc. and to include belly dancing in that would be incredible. I live in Bethel, is there anything going on (meetings, practices, lessons, etc.) in the Fairfield county area that i could get to? If someone could let me know, that'd be great. Thanks! =) ~DQ

Feeling Lost? Let the full moon guide you to the Gathering of the Tribe.

Gathering of the Tribal Moon
Charter Oak Cultural Center
Sunday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Please consider joining the tribe for updates and an open exchange of ideas for all facets of this event, http://tribes.tribe.net/gatheringofthetribalmooninhartford
drum and dance and wiggle in your pants.
revolution is happening in your hips and hands
let me be free - let you be free too
free to laugh and sing and drum and dance

Michael Beach founded Brothers of the Baladi in Yuma, AZ in 1975 as a backup band for Belly Dancers. Since then the Brothers filial bond has been the music that they perform, create and record. First known for their traditional Middle Eastern music and Belly Dance shows, the quintet now tastefully mixes traditional ethnic acoustic instruments [Oud, Saz, Kanoon, Arabiic Tabla, Zurna, Arghul, Davul, Riq & Def] with Guitar, Bass, Keyboards and Drumkit, vocals in seven languages [Arabic, Turkish, Armenian, Farsi, Spanish, French & English] and exotic rhythms with familiar grooves. The Brothers of the Baladi are named from the Arabic word baladi [bah-luh-dee] which means country, country folk and people. These five Americans fuse all the traditional ethnic music with the music of their homeland – Rock n’ Roll. After 30 years on the road and 10 CDs distributed nationally and internationally with Allegro Distribution – the Brothers continue as “ Ambassadors of Goodwill “ with their music.
